EFICENT visits Volga Tech University in Russia

EFICENT visits Yoshkar Ola to explore options for collaboration with Volga Tech University in the field of forest disturbances and risk management

Yoshkar-Ola is located in the Mari El Republic of the Russian Federation about 14 hours by train east of Moscow. The reception and hospitality at the bilateral Russian-German symposium on “Forest genetics, reproduction, forest (risk) management and climate change” was heartily and framed by highly informative field visits. The Director of the Volga Tech University, Professor Romanov impressed with his energy and motivation to ensure the further development of Volgatech to an even higher standard and to intensify collaboration with forest expertise in particular in Germany as well as with international organisations such as the European Forest Institute.

The presentation of the framework for a European Forest Risk Facility (FRISK) was given by Alexander Held in behalf of the FRISK-GO project team. It was well received and stimulated good discussions and feedback. Especially to ensure a link between research and operational management in the frame of the collect – connect – exchange principle was strongly supported. The visit allowed the also to exchange with German participants who were invited to the conference, namely the Thünen Institute, the Universities of Gottingen and Dresden and the North West German Forest Research Institute FVA NW as well as the BLE (Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food).

Presentations at VolgaTech University

From the Russian side exchange took place with representatives from Moscow University and the State Forest Authority, Volgatech University and the Republic of Mari El Forest Administration. The Mari El Minister for Forests participated for two full days. This was highly appreciated by all participants and allowed for fruitful discussions around the topics of the conference.

Yoshkar-Ola and the Volga Tech University have shown that they could be a valuable partner in the FRISK initiative and other related projects in the future. The region is embedded in forests and has a wealth of cooperation opportunities. In case a FRISK will move forward in the near future collaboration with partners in Yoshkar-Ola and also other institutions in Russia where contacts have been initiated will be sought.
