The Long Silence (Horta de Sant Joan)

May 11, 2015

A documentary has been published on the tragic incident during a wildfire in Catalonia in 2009 where five firefighters lost their lives.

Synopsis
On July 21, 2009, five members of the Specialist Forestry Crew (GRAF) from Catalonian Fire and Rescue Brigade died in a wildfire in the Massis dels Ports area of Horta de Sant Joan (Terra Alta). The only survivor of the crew, Josep Pallàs, the lead officer of GRAF teams, Marc Castellnou, and the father of one of the victims, Jaume Costa, return five years later to the fatal scene, accompanied by other witnesses and forestry experts to reconstruct and analyze on stage the factors that led to the tragic end of entrapment that affected more than a hundred troops, almost all suppression resources deployed in the area. The use of fire to fight fire, the precarious situation of increasingly fuel-laden forests and improving knowledge about the behavior of large forest fires and training of the members who deal with the fire suppression are the basis of the main lessons learned that the protagonists of this story reveal during this trip to Ground Zero. The best and most sincere tribute to the five colleagues who lost their lives there.
